Podol is the historical district of Kiev, one of the most ancient in the city. It lies on a right-bank lowland between the channel of Pochajna river and slopes of little mountains (Shchekavitsa and Khorevitsa). That is why the district has got the name of Podolie (Podol). The first settlements of the district appeared in the beginning of our era.

KIEV, a city of Russia Ukraine, capital of the above government, on the right or west bank of the Dnieper, in 50 0 27' 12" N. and 30° 30' 18" E., 628 m. by rail S.W. of Moscow and 406 m. by rail N.N.E. of Odessa. The site of the greater part of the town consists of hills or bluffs separated by ravines and hollows, the elevation of the central portions being about 300 ft. above the ordinary level of the Dnieper. On the opposite side of the river the country spreads out low and level like a sea.
